上世纪30年代，色妞一家德国巧克力厂的老板是俄国人，色妞面对婚姻和事业双重触礁，万念俱灰。他幻想脱离自己的生活，如同灵魂出窍似的从旁观察自己。当他看到一个街头流浪汉时，那人在他眼里跟他自己长得一模一样。为了“互换身份”，他杀死了对方。本片跟法斯宾德其他作品有很大差异，他采用了知名编剧的剧本，而且还是改编自纳博科夫的小说。精彩对白似乎集中在影片的前三分之一。影片大胆、俗气，曾遭到广泛的恶评。

But honeymoon is soon over as each comes to realize that the other isn't quite what they thought. The liberal woman would like to talk of sex with frankness and ease. The conservative man can't get rid of his traditional sense of superiority. They end up hurting each other and decide to get a (limited) divorce. Once apart, they each begin to feel empty without the other, and realized they need to make an effort to understand each other.
