父亲去世后马丁带着怀孕的妻子茱莉亚来到纽约附近偏远的小镇开始新的生活。克里斯汀、理乃丹尼尔、理乃赫尔登和汤米是四个即将毕业的大学生，他们选择徒步旅行作为学生生活的最后一段回忆。突如其来的停电使小镇的居民都变得惶恐起来，加油站、发电厂都停业，全国都陷入了黑暗中，但是高级的研究员也找不到停电的原因。黑暗的时候并不可怕，可怕的是在光明处隐藏的黑暗……
