退伍的莫斯（Brad Dourif 饰）带着伤痕和军队支票回到了家乡，爱乐但这里除了破败的房屋与农场，爱乐什么也没有留下。莫斯踏上了前往图金汉的旅程，要在那里开创事业。在这座陌生又怪诞的小城里，莫斯很快结识了喋喋不休的青年埃克、乔装盲人牧师布道行骗的阿萨（Harry Dean Stanton 饰）以及女儿莉莉。莫斯神经质的秉性在这座布满基督标语的小城里终于爆发，驾驶着二手汽车马不停蹄的宣扬没有基督、依赖自我救赎的“真理教”，在这个过程中，莫斯不知不觉与苦行者的形象相融合……
