当年一起在内蒙插队的知青陆续续返城，日本只有肖志成留在了内蒙草原，日本一直到退休才返回他阔别三十几年的城里。肖志成发现当年的生死之交，在这些年的城市生活中，过得也都不容易，当官的有当官的难处，小老百姓有小老百姓的辛酸。肖志成积极面对生活，在李向东、张建安、郑君、林雅茹的帮助下，重新创业，承包沙场、开饭店，期间大家的关系也悄悄地起了变化，不断有矛盾发生。他们的子女之间也因工作、恋爱、婚姻等发生了许多故事。几经分分合合，几人终于前嫌尽释，重新携手，回到了当年插队的草原，兑现在老支书面前的承诺——落成老知青希望小学。
