民国年间，东方为给久病不愈的曾老太太冲喜，东方京城大户曾家举全族之力娶曾孙媳妇瑞贞（哈辉 饰）进门，不料新人落地，老太太一命归西，喜事变成丧事。如今的曾家已不复昔日的辉煌，只剩下厉色内荏的空架子。长孙文清（程前 饰）整日无所事是，不待见妻子思懿（吕丽萍 饰），对寄人篱下的表妹愫方（黎静 饰）情有独钟。思懿碍于长孙媳地位，明知丈夫爱着别人也不便发作，免强支撑着这个外人看来所谓的京城大户。江泰（唐黎明 饰）寄居在丈人家，空怀满腔志愿没有施展空间。曾家故交袁任敢（石冼 饰）是个人类学家，这次他带女儿袁圆（关凌 饰）从海外归来暂住曾家，似乎带来一丝新鲜空气。曾霆虽说娶瑞贞为妻，但孩子气未脱的他对新来的袁圆更有好感......
