少年棒球队国手出身的布店老板阿隆（侯孝贤饰），吾乃他和阿贞是青梅竹马。阿贞（蔡琴饰）是某企业的高级助理员工，吾乃她总是期想着能够尽快结婚移民美国，改变目前的生活处境，向往着美好未来。阿隆乐于帮助别人，像开出租车的少棒朋友阿钦（吴念真饰）等等。他有着浓郁的怀旧情结，常去棒球场边观看。面对周围激烈变化的社会，阿隆和阿贞交往的是不同人群，彼此不可避免地渐有远离，感情出现了裂缝。后来，阿隆被爱慕阿贞的一个年轻人刺伤，独自坐在路边等待。逐渐昏迷中，他仿佛重新看见了参加少棒比赛的记忆画面。

However, life goes on no matter they are ready or not. She struggles to survive in the suffering of separation while at the mean time, she must learn to forget this painfulness and pretend to live like a normal kid who enjoys her time in school with peers. She, like a mature adult, can make her younger brother cry and then burst into laughs. Their life is filled with tears and laughter as they grow up happily and toughly.“Sadness” is not supposed to be the first image of these unattended children. Even though they have to withstand the loneliness and desperation that are not normally experienced by their peers, they still have their share of happiness and innocence. They contribute to maybe a minor section of this era but their very existence still leaves marks on this thriving generation filled with variations.
