“因各种烦心事而焦虑不安，狩猎就如同着火的房子一般，狩猎这样的人称作‘火宅之人’。”前妻去世后，作家桂一雄（绪形拳 饰）娶顺子（いしだあゆみ 饰）为妻，夫妻俩连同五个孩子的生活倒也和顺。然一场灾难不幸降临，次子次郎（一柳信之 饰）罹患脑炎，生活不能自理。深受打击的顺子从此迷信宗教，家庭关系日渐紧张。在此期间，一雄结识同样来自九州的年轻女演员矢岛惠子（原田美枝子 饰），并邀请惠子和他一同外出参加太宰治文学碑的剪彩仪式。回到家中后，一雄坦白了这段不伦之恋，顺子愤而离家出走，一雄则干脆搬到宾馆，与惠子沉浸在无尽的欢愉之中……本片改编自檀一雄同名小说，并荣获日本电影学院奖最佳电影、最佳导演、最佳男主角、最佳女主角等7项大奖。
