电视剧《台上人家》讲述的是一个被长期闲置的舞台，国内观住着京剧团、国内观话剧团、杂技团。群艺馆、画院的五户人家，他们嬉称自己为“台上人家”。“台上人家”中有古稀之年的老画家、有曾经名噪一时的京剧演员、有提前退休的群艺馆长、有下海经商的服装设计、有演员改行的电视导演、有大龄独身的女作家、有魔术师出身的穴头、有在歌厅赶场演出的歌手、有没戏可演的演员、有进城闯世界的小保姆……他们有的为衣食劳碌，有的为事业奔忙，有的为前途困惑。
