江南某医院眼科医生徐彦文的医术远近闻名，圣诞一天一位双目失明的农村姑娘蔡兰芝来看病，圣诞这使徐医生回想起八年前，当时在清阳湖插队的他考取了医学院，好友为他送行，他们驾船过河的时候不慎将一条渔船撞翻，船上的那对父女俩被救以后，父亲受了伤。后来，父亲回家以后，伤势严重，不幸死去，兰芝又因为意外摔倒双目失明。徐医生此时面临着选择，到底给不给兰芝治好眼睛，。在院长和妻子的支持下，他毅然决定为兰芝治好眼睛。最后，他主动投案了。
